Yes, you can,  and it’s a good idea to get a refinishing service because the stairs are very visible. This will make a great impression on guests.  It also allows you to change the color of the stain.  Hardwood floors are classic and timeless, but stain colors tend to follow trends; you might decide to change your decor or just want a change.

The refinishing process is similar to any hardwood floors.  The difference is that it is done by hand, however, so it’s a more time-consuming process.

Stairs are just as prone to scratching and dullness as any other wood flooring.  With stairs, people run up and down all day.  Animals may also clench the tread.  That will create scratches.

If you need a hardwood refinishing in East Montpelier, VT, look no further than us.  We’ll be happy to address any of your concerns.

The process with sanding

The stain is stripped.  Then a hand orbital sander is used on the treads and risers.  A hand sander is used on banisters, balusters, and railings if needed.

Then it’s vacuumed to remove all the dust entirely.  That is because the next step is to apply stains (by hand) and the goal is to keep debris out of the coating. Depending on the type, multiple coats may be needed; there needs to be plenty of drying time between them.  Finishes are then applied.

Does a refinishing service always require sanding?

No.  Many times the scratches are in the veneer and not the actual wood. A refinishing service can just etch the already existing polyurethane and recoat.

It will be necessary to sand, however, if the scratches are worn down to the wood, if you’ve waxed them or if you want to change the color of the stain.

Generally, one should stay off a refinished floor entirely for at least 24 hours.  For the next 24 hours, walk only in stocking feet.  Don’t wear shoes and don’t be barefoot because soles of feet have oils that may transfer.  Keep all animals off the refinished stairs for at least 48 hours.
